Located about 350 km north of Baghdad, Erbil is the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan. The city has been inhabited since possibly 5000 BC and is noted as one of the longest continually inhabited areas in the world! With a population of about 1.6 Million people in 2011, Erbil anchors a major trading route between Baghdad and Mosul and is home to Kurds, Arabs, Assyrians, Turcoman, Armenians, Yazidis, Shabaks, Circassians, Kawliyah and Mandeans. The Citadel of Arbil, pictured above, has recently been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (June 2014).
